Director of Nursing
Position Summary: Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, and along with the Medical Director, the Director of Nursing is a Registered Nurse who manages the client services of the Metroplex Women’s Clinic (MWC).
Qualifications:
A. Holds a current license in good standing with the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) and maintains Continuing Education requirements as set forth by the Texas BON.
B. Maintains current CPR certification.
C. Nursing experience in administration or management is preferred.
D. Is willing to be trained in a Basic Limited Ultrasound Training Program and will observe a minimum of fifty sonograms performed by a qualified sonographer and will perform a minimum of fifty to seventy-five supervised limited sonograms.
E. Demonstrates competent knowledge of the care of obstetrical and gynecological clients and women’s health issues.
F. Agrees with the MWC’s Statement of Principle, Mission and Faith; Philosophies of Ministry and Service.
G. Is dependable, stable and capable of following through on commitments.
H. Expresses a sincere desire to reach out to women in crisis pregnancy situations, especially to those who are abortion-minded and abortion-vulnerable.
I. Maintains a consistent life-affirming philosophy.
J. Must complete the MWC’s Client Coordinator Training Program.
Responsibilities:
A. Supervision:
1.Assures that client services are adequate and appropriate.
2. Organizes, directs and evaluates professional and ancillary personnel.
3. Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, assures that health care providers conform to the center’s limited medical policies and procedures.
B. Management:
1. Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, develops, maintains, reviews and updates the centers’ policies, procedures and protocols.
2. Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, establishes and maintains an organizational structure and management system which assures efficiency,
accountability, appropriate delegation of tasks and records of client services.
3. Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, recommends and implements goals and objectives for the centers.
4. Establishes and maintains an evaluation system and quality assurance program.
5. Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, and in compliance with the Standing Orders of the Medical Director, oversees medical and nursing services
performed at all centers.
6. Supervises nursing personnel in the performance of Limited Ultrasound exams.
7. Reviews all sonograms performed by nursing personnel for accuracy and educational opportunities prior to taking them to the Consulting Physician for review.
8. Establishes and coordinates with Consulting Physicians who review and sign-off on all limited sonograms performed at MWC approximately every 2 weeks but
not more than 4 weeks.
C. Nursing Care:
1. Maintains working knowledge of Limited Ultrasound, nursing methods, principles and practices in relation to the prevention and treatment of disease,
emergency procedures, safety and infection control, center systems, supplies and equipment for each MWC location.
2. Provides nursing care that assesses client needs and makes nursing judgments that reflect safe nursing practices.
3. Maintains accurate and complete client records.
4. Reviews client’s medical history, focusing on OB/GYN history, use of prescription medications, drugs/alcohol/tobacco abuse, assesses client for physical,
emotional, sexual abuse and reports to proper authorities when appropriate.
5. Provides health education to client and family when appropriate on abstinence, STI’s, abortion procedures and risks, adoption, pregnancy: normal and
abnormal symptoms, fetal growth and development, proper nutrition, pre-natal care and the importance of physician evaluation and follow-up.
6. Performs urine pregnancy tests on client when necessary.
7. Prepares client physically and emotionally for a limited ultrasound exam and has client sign necessary consent forms.
8. Performs limited ultrasound exams on client.
9. Refers client to physician and/or other agencies as indicated.
10. Refers abnormal sonograms to OB/GYN, nearest hospital emergency room or county hospital for further evaluation.
11. Accurately documents client visit on all client records and enters data into computer.
12. Does client follow-up including post-delivery f/u calls and documents all information.
13. Orders and maintains adequate supplies for sono room and testing rooms, i.e.: pregnancy tests, specimen cups, exam gloves, sono printer paper, sono gel,
exam table paper, client drapes, probe covers, lubricating gel, Sani-Cloth Wipes and Revital Ox Resert with the assistance of Nurse Leads.
14. Cleans and disinfects ultrasound equipment and testing areas following each exam/test and prepares room for next client according to procedure.
15. Counsels clients during peak times as needed.
16. Assists other health care providers, Client Coordinators and staff as needed.
17. Reviews client sono records from each MWC office for accuracy and documentation.
18. Participates in chart review, client follow-up and other quality assurance mechanisms.
20. Contacts sonogram clients through Ekyros to confirm upcoming appointments.
D. Staff Development:
Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer:
1. Recruits, orients and trains qualified support staff to meet the needs of the center.
2. Participates in establishing and conducting in-service meetings.
3. Evaluates center services, policies, procedures and protocols.
4. Trains staff and Client Coordinators on how to perform urine pregnancy testing and how to instruct/assist client to perform self-administered pregnancy test.
5. Oversees Nurse Leads and their responsibilities.
E. Public Relations:
1. Promotes MWC in the community in an effort to increase awareness and clientele, recruit volunteers and obtain financial support.
2. Establishes and maintains professional working relationship with community OB/GYN physicians and their nursing personnel.
3. Establishes and maintains professional working relationship with community organizations which align with MWC values, promoting client wellness through
local resources.
4. Actively participates as a member of the North Texas Nurse Manager Group sharing information with other pregnancy centers throughout the North Texas
region.
F. Personal Development:
1. Attends continuing education programs that enhance nursing knowledge and skills relating to management, obstetrical and gynecological care, women’s health
issues and the performance of quality limited ultrasound exams.
2. Maintains professional licensure and CPR certification.
3. Attends staff meetings and in-services.
4. Updates ultrasound training and techniques annually and more frequently if possible.
5. Circulates relevant and current nursing educational materials related to the performance of limited ultrasound and nursing care of the OB/GYN client.
